Vigil for Afghan asylum seeker who died in Melbourne detention

July 19, 5:30-7pm, State Library of Victoria

https://www.facebook.com/events/643528052795898/

A young Afghan asylum seeker who fled the Taliban has died in Melbourne’s detention center (MITA) in Broadmeadows, he was just 23. He came to Australia by boat as an unaccompanied 17 year old minor, he spent 6 years in legal limbo and two years in detention.

His case was delayed like 1600 others, by ex PM John Howard’s unlawful excision of Ashmore Reef from the migration zone. The circumstances of his death will be investigated by a coroner. What he do know is that he should never have been imprisoned, he came to Australia as a child fleeing horrific circumstances and had committed no crime.

A crime was committed against him by his imprisonment and death within Australia’s detention regime. Australia’s prisons for refugees are in crisis, both the onshore and offshore camps must close.

No more deaths – free the refugees.
