Rally: Save Medevac – Save Refugee Lives – Bring Them Here!

Date: Saturday November 23
Time: 2-5pm
Location: State Library of Victoria

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton’s move to repeal the Medevac Bill and restrict medical transfers from offshore to Australia has passed the Lower House and is likely to come to the Senate in the late November sitting.

The medical need is clear. Since the Bill was introduced in March the government has agreed to transfer over 80 people under the provisions of the Act—mostly from Manus Island.

It is a pitifully small number, but before the Medevac Bill, Manus was a medical black hole, with the government refusing medical transfers and the Pacific International Hospital obstructing the provision of medical records.

We will rally just before the Senate vote to demand that the government not go back to the days when it had effectively total control and could deny medical treatment to refugees with impunity. It was political bureaucrats over ruling doctors that led to the death of Hamid Khazaei from a cut foot.

We know that the Medevac Bill by itself will not get everyone off Manus and Nauru. We will also demand that government close the camps that are destroying the health of refugees and asylum seekers, and bring them all to safety in Australia.
