FRIDAY MAY 25, 5:30-6:30pm, STATE LIBRARY
Join the Refugee Action Collective for a vigil + protest to mark the death of yet another refugee on Manus Island.
– Shawfikul Islam, Australian Burmese Rohingya Organisation
A thirty two Rohingyan refugee has died on Manus on Tuesday May 22.
Reports indicate he was killed after jumping from a moving bus. Refugees on Manus believe it was most likely suicide.
The Rohingyan refugee had suffered for a long time with a medical problem, for which had previously been medivacced to Australia for treatment in 2014 only to be returned Manus.
This young man survived persecution in his home country only to be killed by the cruel policies of the Australian government.
We must be very clear: the Australian government is responsible for his death. He, and the thousands of refugees who have been illegally detained on Manus and Nauru should never have been sent there.
The death of this man is one more reason to evacuate Manus Island and Nauru immediately and bring all refugees and asylum seekers to Australia.
This death brings the total deaths on Manus Island to seven.(Another three have died on Nauru.)
We ask that people attending the vigil bring flowers if they can. During the Manus protests last year, this Rohingyan man would hold flowers to appeal for support.
