Refugee Action Collective Victoria presents:
Chaulka, Please Tell Us The Time, a documentary co-directed by Behrooz Boochani and Arash Kamali Sarvestani.
This incredible and deeply moving documentary captures life inside the Manus Island immigration detention centre. It was filmed on a mobile phone by Behrooz Boochani who has been detained on the island since August 2013.
It also features fascinating interviews with Manus locals about their attitudes to Australian colonialism and the detention centre on their land.
Chaulka is the name of the tropical bird native to Manus. It’s also the name of a solitary confinement cell used by guards to punish refugees.
The regional processing centre in the film was closed in late 2017 after the PNG and Australian government authorities lay siege to the hundreds of refugees remaining inside. They were resisting being moved to new prisons on Manus Island and demanding they be brought to Australia or evacuated to a safe country.
Most of the men remain in detention on Manus Island.
The film will be introduced by Liam Ward, RAC member & lecturer in cinema at RMIT. The screening will be followed by discussion.
Entry by donation.
