Unionist and Refugee Activist Strategy Meeting – Sat Nov 9, 1pm @ ANMF House

Sat Nov 9 1pm @ ANMF House 540 Elisabeth St City

Beat Back Abbott’s attacks!

The Refugee Action Collective (VIC) invites you to a:
Unionist and Refugee Activist Strategy Meeting

In the aftermath of the election of the Coalition government, the Refugee Action Collective is calling a strategy meeting of unionists and refugee activists.

The Coalition has put attacks on refugees at the front and centre of its policies – and is proposing to introduce a raft of draconian anti-refugee policies, in part as a diversion from the rest of its unpopular, and anti-union agenda.

The aim of the meeting is to have an initial discussion about how to build more effective networks between unionists and refugee activists, in order to build greater support for the refugee campaign.

Various unions and the ACTU already have come out in support of refugees. The challenge is to more actively mobilise union members within the refugee movement.
SPEAKERS:
– Kevin Bracken, MUA Victorian Branch Secretary
– Jeannie Rea, NTEU National President
Discussion on:
– Campaign priorities and strategies
– Building union rank and file networks of refugee supporters

Public Meeting: The True Story of a People Smuggler – with author Robin De Crespginy

why PEOPLE SMUGGLERS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM
and DETERRENCE IS NO SOLUTION

6.30 pm  Thur October 3
201 Napier St, Fitzroy, Victoria 70619

The Refugee Action Collective presents a forum with author Robin De Crespigny. Her prize winning book “The People Smuggler” is the true story of why one man fled Saddam Hussain’s regime to become both a refugee and a people smuggler. But it is also the story of why refugees will risk so much to find safety in Australia, and how Australian deterrence policies have made those risks greater. As Abbott begins Operation Sovereign Borders, Ali Al Jenabi’s story gives us an invaluable insight into the human impact of anti-refugee policies like the criminalisation of people smugglers, mandatory detention and the life destroying temporary protection visa programs.

Entry by gold coin donation – All Welcome!
