Action Alert – Fund Child Care Not Detention – KIDS OUT OF DETENTION! Rally this Friday 10am Glen Iris

Friday, 1 May 2015
St Andrew’s Church Parish Hall, 1560 Malvern Rd, Glen Iris
(former Immigration Minister Scott Morrison will be speaking from 10am – 11.30am)As current Immigration Minister Peter Dutton makes moves to return a newborn baby, and a five year old girl with PTSD to Nauru, the former Immigration Minister Scott Morrison will be speaking at a Glen Iris childcare centre about his agenda for childcare which includes cuts to rebates.”At least $1.2 billion has been spent on offshore detention
in the last year. $3.6 billion was spent on offshore and onshore detention the year before. If mandatory detention was abandoned there would be no need for cuts to childcare’ said Chris Breen from the Refugee Action Collective.

“Around 200 children continue to be detained offshore on Nauru. ‘Childcare’ on Nauru is prison, in 500C heat, with a playground of crushed limestone. The Abbott is goverment determined to send more children, including newborn babies, to Nauru. Government attempts to force families from Darwin to Nauru,  included the forced separation of a mother and her 3 month old baby for several hours, and the separation of familes. One mother with a four week old baby appears to have lost her milk as a result of the stress” continued BreenGeorgie Attwooll also from the Refugee Action Collective said  “As Immigration Minister Scott Morrison presided over a detention regime which oversaw very high levels of self-harm and mental distress for children in detention. Allegations of 33 sexual assaults involving children took place on the mainland in this period. In addition former Nauru psychiatrists and social workers accused Morrison of ignoring allegations of sexual abuse on Nauru for 17 months. Morrison has never apologised for the harm done, for his lack of action, or his attempt to claim that Save the Children staff had made up the allegations.”

The Forgotten Children report says ‘The Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed that during a 15 month period from January 2013 to March 2014, 128 children in detention engaged in actual self-harm. One hundred and seventy-one children threatened self-harm’.Breen concluded “Scott Morrison is not someone who can be trusted with children. His new agenda for childcare shows that his cruelty does not stop at the border. All kids deserve quality childcare – and freedom!”Kids don’t belong in detention, no-one does
